Hey folks,

I have a 2012 Speed3 that I picked up as a CPO. Bought at 33k, now at 52k. Recently the clutch has been grabbing all the way at the end of the pedal, and I recently had it bled, and that didn't do anything. I'm guessing the clutch is starting to go, if that is the case. I have no problem with stock pedal feel, but I'm also ~130lbs and short (5'3, I sit close!), so I can't go much heavier on pedal effort. I have an NYC commute, so I deal with a lot of silly drivers, and stop and go traffic.

I have read the recent posts and threads, and I was leaning towards a SB S2 Daily, but the most recent thread suggested an ACT clutch, as the SBs are heavy. Not sure if @Raider can attest to this, as I saw a post about putting in a Luk combo into his. I've heard mixed reviews over Spec clutches (one guy was even struggling to find gears!), and further mixed reviews over SB clutch effort.....

I don't mind a clutch that grabs quickly. I DO mind a binary clutch (whatever clutch is in this thing bangs in even when I release it REALLY slowly). Longevity is the real priority, though. Since I DD my speed3, it is stock, but maybe i'll throw some inspection-friendly CS mods in it later. I appreciate any advice, since I really feel like that clutch is going to let go at any minute...

Stock clutch. I wouldn't even mess with "comparable to stock". Just stick with stock. I had an ACT clutch and blew through 3 slave cylinders once on the highway in heavy traffic. This was after my "builder" convinced me I should "upgrade" when I wanted to stick with the stock clutch.

Is it under powertrain warranty? 7/100k for first sale if so.

I have a Speed6, but I recently installed installed a Fidanza/Luk combo. I like the pedal feel, and feel that the jumpy clutch feel of the OEM unit is gone. Its much nicer to drive daily. I know you have SB and ACT in your list, but considering the OEM/Luk is capable of handling a good amount of power have you considered? You are probably going to need a new flywheel anyways before your new clutch wears out, DM flywheels arent long term parts. I dont know what your power level, but food for thought.

Thanks for that food! It's stock now, but maaaaybe i'd like to get to ~300hp or so (I have friends with modded Golf Rs and I want to keep up). But yes, I was planning on getting a flywheel with the clutch, since DMFs can't be resurfaced. So i'm guessing Fidanza clutch with OEM flywheel?

What your probably looking for is a Fidanza flywheel p/n#161071 and a LuK OEM rep kit p/n#10-064 (includes clutch disc & pressure plate, release bearing, pilot bearing and moly grease). I bought mine from Amazon because I'm "North of 49°", you might get a good price from some of the known vendors in the US. I got everything for the equivalent of $700us including a braided stainless clutch line(recomended, but sold separately). With the new setup I've heard clutch chatter rarely during the first few 100 miles, but not since. Upshifts are cleaner and rev matching downshifts are almost as good as sex!

great! Thanks for the input. How long have you had it in your car? everything been smooth sailing?
So far, RockAuto has the best price on the clutch, and Amazon has the flywheel for 340. That aint bad at all!

If your car is not tuned and you don't need a clutch that should hold a whole lot more torque don't even think about getting anything else than OEM disk and pressure plate. You can go with a Fidanza flywheel if the one you have is shot (which I doubt it is at so low mileage, but you never know), but keep the PP and disk stock/OEM.

If you're running stock block power, go Luk/Fidanza. I just picked up a built motor genpu with a fresh ACT 6, switching from a stock clutch genjuan, and it definitely feels a lot different from stock. The pedal is heavier but not unreasonable for my stop/go commute, but the engagement is a lot higher at the very top of the pedal and it grabs HARD. It's taken some getting used to, for sure, and the 0-1 shift from a stop still catches me out periodically.
