Hey all. I recently picked up this bnr s4 unit online from a guy. Upon arrival, I noticed that there were scratches in the intake side around the intake turbine. At first, I freaked out thinking I got snowed. There was also a little side to side shaft play, nothing too serious but with nothing to compare it to (except for a k04 with 150k miles on it) I have no idea what is ok.

I called BNR and he said some is normal, 25-30/1000s of an inch. The scratches could be “tooling marks” or just wee bits of dirt that got in there through the intake and made scratch marks.

Here are some photos:

Is this acceptable or is this beyond what it should be? The seller offered to take it back, but if I do that then I’ll have to send the HTP intake I got with it back too :(. I also uploaded a video of the shaft play back and forth in the attachments. It’s important to note that there is no contact of the blades with the housing when I push back and forth. It is close, but there’s no touching. There is no play forward and backward. What do you think?

I emailed BNR, and he said “I machined the housings from v3-4 back when I ran out of inventory.. You’re good.”

Something feels off with this. I want it to work but I have a feeling there may be more wear than $200 off is worth. I reckon I’ll just buy a new one this time, unless one of you seems to think it’s perfectly fine.

I took the turbo in to my Tuner, he said it looks fine. The play is normal. He said there may have been a crap filter on there that let some stuff through, which caused the scratch marks. Worst case scenario I have to send it in to get rebuilt.

time to full send I guess ;)
