Building for the road course...again

Got the head off today. This motor is unbelievably clean. Damn lol.

dealing with all the Honda vtec rocker arm things was a bit of a pain. Got gotta zip tie it all together so the pins and springs and shit don’t pop out. I almost had one pop out. What a pain lol.

See how clean,

The cylinders all look fantastic. Next up I’ll order some parts. Then send the block to the machine shop for a hone…once parts arrive. Then I’ll go from there.

Head needs porting as well but I’ll get some pictures of the stock ports. It’s no wonder these flow so well. Damn lol.

Pulled the bottom end apart tonight. Everything was super clean so that’s awesome. Crank looks great and bearings were in great shape.

I did find this though, to the right of the oil squirter, which I don’t think will matter as there’s no way a ring is traveling that far down?

Anyways, next up block and crank will go to the machine shop to be checked over for cracks or damage, and to have p2w set for the new pistons, and have rings gapped/crank checked out and polished if need be.

waiting on pistons to show up at this point.

Block has been dropped off for machining. First step will be to measure everything. See if I can get away with stock size pistons. If not we’ll go .20 over and go 86.5mm bore. No big. I’m thinking it’ll be ok. Crank shaft also getting measured. Once that’s all done pistons and bearings will be ordered.

I’m in the fence about porting the head. It already outflows like everything…but with how I want this motor to live it would definitely benefit from a little clean up at least. Might buy a die grinder and give it a shot myself.

head will be getting supertech valve trains with oem valves. Good enough for what I need. Getting excited here. I’ll be bringing the civic home soon to get started on some small stuff.

Gotta finally get this damn seat installed lol

There’s a good chance I’ll need to ditch the sliders as they add a lot of height and my head was already hitting the room with my helmet and the stock seat.

other option is I might need the buddy club super low setup. It adds a good drop to the whole setup. We’ll see though

Picked up these buddy club super low seat brackets/rails locally for a pretty good deal. Looks to be a good bit lower then the sparco setup. The sparco setup is actually higher then stock and my helmet was already hitting the roof with the stock seat so I need to go lower, not higher. This should help,

Civic must be a lower cab roof than the 3? The windscreen is def leaned back a lot leading to a lower roof line. Did you have this seat in the Speed?

I never had this seat in the speed. It was supposed to go in the speed but never made it.

in the speed I seemed to have plenty of headroom even with my helmet on. I sat with the seat in the lowest position at all times and it was no problem. The speed didn’t have a sunroof.

the civic has a sunroof and Im thinking the roof is just lower in general as well. Less head room. My head was already touching the roof in the stock seat with my helmet on so I need to go as low or lower, not higher lol

I shopped an 09 si before I bought my speed and I feel like it was overall just smaller. I'm not a huge guy but I felt like it was designed for smaller people

Oh it’s 100% designed for smaller people. I notice it. The speed had great interior space. This said, I did do a 5.5 hour road trip in the civic and it was a non issue

I can’t wait for my stoptech bbk to arrive. It’s taking literally forever as they’re in the middle of merging with raysbestos and fram and whatever the fuck company owns all them. So I’m waiting ever so impatiently lol.

ordered tires today. Said fuck it. They’re all back ordered but I want my place in line.

falken rt660’s
255/40/17 front
225/45/17 rear
These are supposed to be the hot tire as of recent. Re71 or greater levels of grip. Longer life span. Works for me.

excited to relearn to drive with the stagger setup. The one track day I did on that stagger with re71’s was insane. Like insane. It’s basically cheating at that point how well the car rotates. That was on stock suspension.

I’m also not competing at all this season. Requested my money back from the organization. Some fucked up drama due to one of the guys working there surrounding myself so I’m just not even interested anymore. I’ll compete in another series eventually.

Brought the civic home last night. It was super nice out. Man I missed this thing. It’s so slow in a straight line but in the corners the chassis just loads up so well. It is fantastic and this thing is ready to go stupid fast in the corners for sure.

it’s a blank slate vs what my Mazda was. Can’t wait to get started

Picked up my bbk today. Fuck me this kit is the best shit ever. Nicest hardware I’ve ever purchased.

total weight reduction of 42lbs simply by installing this kit. That’s a shit load of unsprung mass reduction.

This kit uses a 2 piece floating rotor, 309mmx32mm. Pad thickness is 0.8 of an inch vs your standard stoptech bbk pad at 0.65. This kit is designed around being the absolute lightest, and increasing service life to the max. Cannot wait to get these on the car.

It's funny how a bigger kit can actually be lighter than factory components. The Wildwoods I have were noticably lighter than my factory calipers.

The weight savings was my main reason for going with this kit. The regular stoptech st40 kit which I had on my speed was still lighter then oem, but still heavier then this c43 kit.

on a low power lightish car this will go a long way. Not to mention my other planned weight reduction(wheels, titanium exhaust, ac delete, bunch of other minor weigh redux)

That's sexy makes me want to get a kit for the speed

No StopTech Trophy? :D
These are more better!!! Lighter. Adding lightness!!!

haha. I liked the trophy kit, and for a car like my Mazda it would’ve been the better kit vs the st40. That said the civic is so much lighter, and only getting MORE light so I really shouldn’t need anything compared to the Mazda when it comes to braking. I am already noticing this in a big way.

Did a little weight reduction today cause the weather was nice enough. 12c and the sun was shining so why not lol.

I will call this “stage 1” weight reduction.
I removed the rear speakers, factory sub, rear headrests, factory amplifier, and spare tire for a total weight savings of 50.4lbs. That’s not bad for stuff that literally doesn’t matter!!

Factory sub, and rear speakers removed.
(pulling out my 12” sub is something I do the night before a track day)

wiring my head unit to the output of the factory amp so I can still have some music. Just did the fronts of course.

Next up the car will go to the body shop. It has two small rust spots on the rear quarters where they meet the bumper. Planning to get that fixed and a small rust spot near the gas cap.

after that, it’s go time for installing the Coilovers, then getting my titanium exhaust done, then installing my brake kit, then my wheels and hopefully my falken rt660’s are here by then to go on my new wheels.

then…it’s off to the race track to fully send it.

I’ve been invited to a private track day planned for April 10th, friend hooked it up! Video to come.

Awaiting vids, lol
I worked for a T1 supplier to the Alliston assembly plant '99-'05, we made safety structure parts and stampings. Been to assembly many times. We always thought Hondas were what happened when your lawn mower had sex with an F1 car, lol. So simple, yet so refined. As much as I like the Speeds (for a Road car) I understand your draw to the Civic.

sold my gauges from my mazda. I had my oil temp/pressure gauge and my wideband boost fail safe gauge. I intended to use them in the civic, i even bought the expensive AF dual gauge pod for the civic...but plans changed. Sold off the gauges and the pod.

i will be doing something a little different in the civic.

i was planning on buying an aim solo DL 2. This is a laptimer with telemetry data, as well as a can/obd2 logger. this thing aint cheap but its one of the best.

Well with the mazda being gone now...i dont really need something portable to move between cars so i will be going with the aim Mxm dash logger.

this thing is badass. 3 digital inputs, 4 analog inputs, laptimer, logger, telemetry collector. This unit will display my oil temp/oil pressure, boost in the future, as well as afrs or whatever else i want. I will also still have my hondata which displays a ton of good info on my phone.

excited to get just a little more serious on the whole "going fast" thing. doing laps forever and getting tons of seat time is GREAT...unless youre practicing bad habits/going slowly. Data will show all.
