Building for the road course...again

Resealed timing cover. Swapped on my good oil pan. Fresh vtc strainer, fresh vtec strainer. Fresh timing chain tensioner.

Everything was nice and clean. Lower end had a little tarnish starting but it wiped off with my finger. Few good oil changes and it’ll be nice and clean. No weird stuff in the oil pan so that’s also good.

my work space. People passing by are always like whattttt in the ffffff is this guy doing

Went to prime the car today. Made a few psi but that was it. Wouldn’t build. That was a little worrying.

Decided to start it up. Screw it. Let’s go. Well then I had no ecu communication when trying to load my stock engine tune.

I knew I pulled the ecu 12V turn on fuse. I guess I put it back in the wrong spot lol. After fixing that…

Car fired up immediately. Like half a crank and bam. Came to life. Tons of oil pressure. Engine sounds great. Only ran it for 10 seconds as I have no coolant yet but glad its working.

Axles are back in. Suspensions buttoned up. Just need the front clip now and coolant and it’s off to the races. Woooo!

Huge hustle here. I’m happy with the progress.

Went out for a drive. Collected some logs. The car is definitely significantly slower. The lack of midrange makes me sad. It’s a noticeable step downwards but it’s ok for a mystery motor.

The close to stock rev limiter really sucks too. Damn lol. Comes up too soon

Virtual dyno shows 199whp 149wtq. The tune file im on is old and was done with different bolt ons so I’m hoping there’s another 5-10whp to find. I’ll be ok with that.

Car drives well though. The missing power just means suspension mods. More rear bar is up next I think lol.

Track day coming up this Saturday. The tune is coming along nicely. Huge improvement in midrange and overall torque. VDyno shows an increase of 7ftlbs and the gain is across the entire curve. It feels good for what it is honestly.

I am expecting I lost at least 1 second of lap time give or take but we will see. Curious what the straight line speeds show.

I am also thinking im gonna pull out the slicks for this track day. I may bring both slicks and nankangs for some comparisons but the slicks are old so i dont expect a ton from them.

Virtual dyno below. My logging road goes up hill so the overall numbers are wrong but I always start in the same spot going the same direction.
Revving to only 8500rpm is more of a buzz kill than I expected. Gears just end too quickly.

Nice gains and it’s immediately noticeable in the car. With the gearing it actually pulls nicely lol. It ain’t much but it’s honest work and still capable of waxing most things out there

Good Luck, and have fun with it...Better than sitting at home! You never know, you might notice a few things that can help you once you are back up to full power cuz now you really have to work your skills, lol.

This is exactly it. I’m actually hoping to find time in other ways. Either more chassis tuning or more driver mod. I’m always after driver mod!

Once I do have another built engine in here it’ll only be that much better.

And yea I’d rather be on track with 200hp then not at all lol

Went to the track on sunday. Ended up 4/10ths off my PB with the built motor lol. I dont know what to say.

This car/chassis just has so much in it. The time finder was to brake slightly later, but lift off the pedal much sooner. Just pile the speed on. It’s not easy to get right but man I was SENDING this thing through the corners. It is properly quick. The chassis is well sorted and the development has paid off

200whp of fury right here!!!!!

I was able to back up my laptime a few times. 1:21.9. Fastest with the built motor was a 1:21.5 but i know that setup had at least a second in it. My theoretical best with the 200whp setup was a 1:21.3 so not TOO far off that.

Second fastest lap of the night here. Little sloppy, left few tenths on the table but overall the few things i tried did work

Drive mod has come along way this season that’s for sure. The cars setup is pretty freaking dialed too. That also helps

By coasting into the corner, the car is able to turn without the forward push from the engine or brakes affecting balance. Are you carrying more speed through the turn?
With this motor you are able to put down 100% of the full throttle you are using on corner exit. The car might be gripping on exit a bit cleaner. Of course the straight speed is lacking.
Im totally talking out my ass here, I have no competition experience and strictly arm chair. But this is a situation where anyone can drive a fast car, but a driver can make a car fast.
Your video you posted makes it look like you are having fun with it for sure!

By being off throttle the car definitely wants to naturally just turn more. This is mostly due to the setup.

Brakes CAN help load up the front end through the entry of the corner. “Trail braking” as it’s called. It’s situational. Sometimes it’s necessary sometimes it just fucks everything up.

I think if I just drove like this with the built engine there would’ve been even more time to find. A lot of the time here was from just not expecting much so trying everything and anything to find time. Gotta try different stuff or you’ll just do the same lap forever right?

I think it’s psychological at this point. Different attitude. Different approach. Data shows I was braking later and WOT sooner. Plus almost every corner my minimum speed was up by 2-7kph. That’s massive.

Putting the power down is easier when you get the car rotated early. Even with the old engine I think now I could’ve easily found time a lot sooner. Damn. It’s too bad.

The big 3 piece sway bar may be up next. More rotation would be more better I think.

Seat time builds confidence. You had a full on race motor, and that probably provided some apprehension.
Going back to the stock (ish) motor, probably provided some courage there to push harder.

I think with the built setup i expected more from the engine so I didnt really change my overall efforts much.

With the stock engine i knew i would have to work to find time so i started trying things which now i could apply to a more powerful setup.

Funny how this works

This was cool. Thought I need a brake master as my pedal was fuuuucked. Turns out I didn’t need one even though we did the brake master. Fuck me. Drove home from the track like this. Terrible terrible noises. Wow lol

This isn’t right

Well that’s very broken

Many many G forces. 280k kms on that front hub. Lots of curb hopping. I tried a new line through one corner and I’m almost 100% sure that’s what killed it. Hit a curb pretty aggressively and I could feel it wasn’t great. It was fast though lol

Spent a little time today inspecting my left over rods and pistons. Theory was always about wrist pin failure but I can now 100% confirm it.

I noticed one of the rods was slightly binding up on the wrist pin. I removed the C clips and that pin is not coming out. It moves maybe 1-2mm then binds up HARD.

This is in fact a bent wrist pin. Let this be a warning for any high rpm builds. Wrist pin matters.

That it do. What was your rod ratio on that engine? That helps a LOT for peak speeds/forces exerted on the pistons/rods/pins.
I've seen pics of rods that got pulled apart like silly putty due to revs.

1.62 for rod ratio.

All 3 remaining pins are bent. I was able to hammer one out and can visually see the oval.

These pins were straight up not up to the task of sustained 9300rpm. I’m sure they would give a few seasons in a drag car or a street car but definitely 100% not suitable for road course usage.

I blame wiseco for this. They clearly suck
