Corksport turbo for stock 2007 with 160k?

Hey Guys,

I have a 2007 with 160k Ive owned since day1. Only mods are KWv3 and Mazdaspeed CAI. She runs great, had timing chain changed 80k miles ago. Burns maybe 1/2 quart between 5000k oil changes. Original clutch.

I'm on the second OEM turbo. Think its too risky to put a Corksport CST4 turbo in this old dog? I know Ill need AccessPort, upgraded HPFP internals/o-rings, spark plugs, ignition coils.

It's all about the tune. If you are going to upgrade the turbo get one that is sized for your power goal. Too big of a turbo and you will have all the lag and transient response issues without the payoff of the big top end hit.

I'm in a similar situation to you but only 125k on the first turbo and I'm looking at the atp 2868gtxr it should be a nice little bump and be able to hold moderate boost to redline.

I don't know how big the corksport turbo is but I think is similar to the 30xx size Garrett turbos which if that is true is probably more turbo than you are looking for
 
CST4 is the entry level turbo from Corksport. They have a larger option. I just want a little bump and dont want power dropping out at 5k.

The tune...I suppose CorkSport can tune or has generic tune for that turbo? Not sure.

Corksport doesn't tune, you can go with Purple Drank or Freektune for a very reasonable price, basically everyone except for the self-tuned folks use those two tuners.

Take care of your maintenance items, i.e. have your injectors cleaned and new seals put in, look into maybe getting a HPFP o-ring rebuild kit. You don't need new coils, just make sure your plugs are new and gapped properly. Valve cleaning is also a good idea, as well as a new PCV valve and a vented catch can / valve cover vent for the increased crankcase pressures. Do a quick compression test, and think about an upgraded intercooler while you're at it.

There are a lot of good build threads, take some time to peruse a few from start to finish and get a good understanding of the routes people take and why they take them.
 
Thanks for those tips. I just did a second valve cleaning recently. Also installed CC (but not vented) and another new PCV valve.

I dont need anything extreme. I need reliability as this is a DD. Doesn't have the punch it did when it was newer. Likely the cheap Chinese turbo I put in it when in a pinch a few years back.

Maybe Ill start with ACCESSPORT and HPFP internals and o-rings and run her a few months then go to turbo.
 
Definitely don't use a stock Cobb map from the AP, you can purchase an OTS map from Freektune that gives you a couple of revisions for a reduced price, and that will give you an experienced perspective on the data your car is sending.

350+ WTQ is about the stock clutch limit. Beyond that is when you NEED to start looking at new clutches. As for traction, you shouldn't really be spinning wheels at all as long as you've got decent tires. For street at your power level, Michelin Pilot Sport is my auto recommend.

(Edited HP to TQ, since it's really TQ that destroys your clutch)

350WHP is plenty. Thanks for the info. I've been through 3 sets of Pilot Sports! Would never get anything else. Vredestein for winter...

The accessport will come with tunes. Don't under any circumstances install any of these tunes on your car they are all terrible and will cause issues. Cobb wrote them all in like 2008 when virtually nothing was known about tuning these engines

Junk doesn't even do it justice horrendous is more appropriate.

For $145 a freektune ots+ map is a great way to go while you're just adding the odd mod here and there ie intake and hpfp. He does a MAF calibration and then another log review to make sure you're running properly it's great.

I drove on it for years, having run the Cobb one for a day or two to see what it was like then swapped to the freektune I can say the Cobb one drive like shit IMO whereas freektune OTS+ car felt amazing even over stock tune throttle table of note is very well done, smooth and responsive.

Thanks for the recommendation. So if you use a basic Freaktune on a stock car and you are forced to use less than 91 octane, is that tune less forgiving? I always use 91+ but occasionally Ive been in a bad spot and had to use what was available.

uhh...now I need Versatune or Accessport.
 
I would never put in less than 91 in the stock car, freektune you would request a 91 or higher octane tune, I had gotten a 91 and 94 ots+ from freektune for when I didn't have access to 94.

If you're in an area that doesn't have 91 (seems odd to me) you could see about asking for ones that's for less but be prepared he may want to do a full custom tune for that, really I'd more more inclined to put 89 in the tank for an 91 tune if no 91 and just baby it until I was fully back on 91.
 
On rare occasions Ive been on long trips and 91 was unavailable and I had to use 89. Super rare for sure.
