Lets Talk About Brake Ducting

Yes, but I want to get some housings to measure up

If you could design Won and Pu 3D ducting for brake cooling, I'm sure you'd have a market. Such an important thing for tracking... Even just the entryway/mount and the exit port/mounting to be connected by that flexible ducting you often see in air cooling applications:

I can mail you my broken housing. Other side should be mirror. If you need both I can send them. My car will be done for 1 month I hope

Its probably too late now, but they sell brake ducting kits for the focus ST and RS. It attaches to the LCA. From what I have seen in CAD and on vehicle, the RS and ST LCAs are very similar to the MS3.

Yeah I looked at those, but they weren't quite what I wanted. I wanted to get air from the front of the car not just a small duct from below the LCA. that and I like the idea of sealing off the dust shield a bit to force the air though the rotor vents more. Assuming this is what you are talking about:

The RS comes from the factory with brake deflector thingees. And they look like they may bolt up to the speed LCA.

Close but not quite, those look better than what the RS uses.

So @Maisonvi; any update on this? I'm currently looking for my own local peeps to help fab something up, but if you have something ready and would consider selling one I'd be all ears. It'll probably be at least May before I'm on the track again, but I don't want to wait until the last minute to put something together (aka, what I did for all my winter projects).

Im actaully planning to work on it some more this weekend. I just picked up some spare fog light mounts, and am going to try and 3d model those up to get an idea if I can print some plenums for the front of the car. The dustsheilds are done, and I have 12' of 500 degree rated ducting hose to go on.

In the other forum the brake duct thread has magically come to life again. From that, and my increased reading on the subject, I'm starting to wonder if the fog lights are the right inlet point. The air might be moving too sideways to get good flow to the brakes. This could be one of those 'good enough for HPDE, but not racing' kind of things. There are no shortage of factors that real racers need to consider that I can skip over for my level.

a thought if you end up not getting enough airflow at low speeds. it might be more effective to place a small fan in the duct fording air through it.

Idealy you want them more towards the low pressure zone in the center of the car, but this is an option for now. All Im doing is HPDEs so thats a help. But if it comes to it, I could always run a second hose to the from center of the car. Really Im just kinda experimenting here.

@Maisonvi; don't mean to keep bumping this thread up, but have you made any progress on this? I just spent WAAAYY too long replacing a d/s axle and will be putting in my first version of ducts. Have my 3" duct hose, a bin of hose clamps, and a giant bag of zip ties. I'll put something together this weekend and test it on the track on Monday. I really need something to fix my over-heating issues. Losing the brakes at 120mph is an experience I don't want to have a 3rd time...

I actually have @Hashineer 3d scanning the assemblies to help me draw up the ducting plenums. I have a first attempt at it, but havent really spent any time trying to mess with the CAD for it this week.

Nice! If you do get something together, and can sell it for a reasonable price, definitely let me know. I can poke around here in PA and see if any of the other guys would be interested in case volume helps things. No one else has mentioned overheating issues, but who restricts their parts buying to only things they need?! ;)

Necro necro, did this die out or did anyone make good 3d scans and prints? Would be awesome to keep both fogs and have a hole for ducts...

Yeah, I dont have the car anymore, but I do have a 3d Scan (albeit not a great one) of the fog light housing. I never got past my ductape made one, which did end up working for the one track day I got out of it. But I never got to cleaning up the scans to make prints. You are more than welcome to the scans if you want to try and work with them.

Are they huge in size or can they be posted here? Would live to play around with them.
