My WTF am I doing Build/Maintenance Thread

Would a washer under the bolt head be beneficial?

Somebody noticed. I actually just noticed myself looking at the washer on the floor. Probably - I didn't check my washer bin for the correct size - the original one was too large to fit correctly in there but I know I have a mess of them, I'll get one added.
 
About to find me a shop to diagnose my clunks. I'm out of ideas. Everything is straight and tightened to spec...as close to spec as my digital torque wrenches can be. Sounds like my rear suspension isn't even engaging so my shocks are set all the way hard or something else is thunking around I didn't loosen previously.
 
Clunk and noise is from...the passenger rear and is essentially the same issue. This one still has the welded nut but apparently I fucked up the threads on it. This cause a slight backing out of the bolt which resulted in just enough horizontal motion of the strut to make a racket. I ordered new trailing arms for each side, after 105K its just time to replace these things and stop wasting time.

Until they arrive I'm trying to knock the welded on but stripper nut out and/or drill it out. I don't think I have a metal bit that is the right diameter and I know I don't have a torch. I'll try again tomorrow.

I just replaced all the suspension parts in the rear of my car and it feels great, too much rusty stuff back there to do an alignment so I finally bit the bullet and did it all. I sitll have one small clunk up front that I am pretty sure is the spherical bearing on the top hat. I used some pu parts in my juan without issues.

Heck ya! Looking at all that rust is why I'm glad I live this far south, I have no rust - just 10 years of me driving hard I guess. Well...and breaking shit, I'm good at that.

That being said I ordered new trailing arm links and they should be in Friday. Ordered new bushings - bot sure the new arms come with them or existing one probably need replacing anyways. I'm certain that will fix the noises and clunks I was hearing (I've said that too many times now).

I just did my rear brakes this past weekend...don't think I've ever had them serviced before (shame on me) and man, the rust back there is shameful.

How did the replacement of all the components go?

No broken bolts but I had to get the MAP torch out many times. It was a long and slow process but was pretty rewarding. The trailing arm control arm alignment bolts did have to be cut out as they were just too stuck but new ones for that are cheap.

New trailing arms delivered last night - all shiny and black...and covered in labels.

Passenger side shouldn't take me too long - most things are off on that side already. I'm ready to drive again and not have to fix anything for a bit....my motorcycle isn't gonna fix its self apparently.
 
Passenger side all done and torqued up except for the bolt that got me here in the first place. I have some temp bolts of the same kind but only 8.8 grade, the proper bolts are on the way, I don't know why I didn't order them at the same time. Neither bolt want to thread into the passenger side 'easily' and now I'm a little gun shy on just cranking it in there, really don't want to end up back where I was. Both bolts fit fine on the uninstalled driver's side. I'll replace the driver's side and look at it again after that.
 
Might just need to run a thread chaser through there

Excellent idea...can't find one for m12x1.25. I sacked up and took a socket to it - went in no issues. Finished the driver's side and took a drive around the block. I think I'm finally back in business but I'll know for sure on a longer drive tomorrow.
 
Bolts delivered and installed last week. Probably the best this car has felt since the day I bought it.

Couple of things to look at when I feel like it and get the chance.

  • Check for rubbing on the tires - probably need to reset the upper limit stops. I think I hear some rubber sounding squeaks at low speeds but it could be something else.
  • Check torque on front - seems when I first start up and pull out of the garage somethin "shifts" and I get a slight clunk. After that I am unable to hear anything else after that initial one.

And apparently its time for an oil change - my containers are still full from last time. Other then that I think I will leave things alone for now until something else breaks. Really need to get started on pulling the motorcycle apart but I'm on the fence and debating just having a shop do it...I dunno.
 
Developed a P3001 yesterday on the highway. Limp mode all the way home after work, the one time I've gone in to the office in months. Pulled spark plug #1 and it was pretty fouled up.

VC Gasket perhaps, or torn Coil pack boot.

Very well could be, went ahead and ordered a new one. Boot looked to be in good condition still - I'll do the swap around and see. Or see if I have a rubber boot from another one in a bin.

Replaced all the plugs, reset and cleared codes with no difference. I'll do the coil swap around (wish I had a fmic at times like this) here later and see.

Yup, close as I can get it with my wire feeler gauge, .025 slides in/through and .30 won't fit. I had a radial gauge but it is currently MIA.

I'll do the coil swap around after I wake up a bit more as a test for sure. I want to say I played this whack-a-mole game 2 years ago or so and after replacing coils, plugs and boots and an intake valve cleaning is what fixed it in the end. I feel like I just did a cleaning though - I'll have to check my logbook but by now I have it down pretty quick so I'll do it if need be.

Received the VC gaskets and went ahead and got new intake manifold gasket set along with it last night. I did not replace the intake manifold gasket my last cleaning. I need to check my VVT as well so I might as well do it all in one go.
