Power Train Skid Plate

I've been searching for all the under body covering to purchase. With the snow, rain, and such I feel more comfortable purchasing one and installing it. During winter, I have a tendency to wash the under carriage, I also don't want this to cause me issues at that time.

Does anyone still have the power train skid plate installed on their Speed 6? Pros? Cons?

Here it is for reference.

I just searched and they do. But do you a) have stock in CS or b) my wife trying to increase my out of pocket?

No really, just curious if people are still running these to I gather prevent debris or things from getting to their electronics/wiring. I don't have anything under there and I just don't like the idea of it. I have my stock ones on my other vehicles so just figured I would see. Both of the Speed 6s that I am dealing with, neither have it.

I have a CS one but I've never installed it :V
Just been too lazy, plus too many issues to have it on. Was a mistake driving around without it though I think.

Thanks. I will continue searching to get one. It's been raining crazy here and I rather leave it sitting until I feel it's all back in order. For now.

I grabbed an OEM from a junkyard.. not sure if it will work since it's from a 3 not a speed..

It was cheap..

Also.. I heard they do provide aid for wind issues.. penguin on here did a whole thing about getting lift issues on the highway and how the plate helps guide air.. also if you have a front mount intercooler, it could help get air to go into the intercooler not around it..

Edited.. for the front mount, you want to channel the air into the front mount.. use the skid and build some ducting to assist air flow..

It's a project I want to do at some point.. bigger issues going on right now unfortunately to deal with first lol

Actually you need custom parts to properly direct air through the rad/fmic.

sadly yes.. i wish i knew all this before going fmic years ago lol

I was reading about the other projects people did on here on ducting, and i wanted to take it a step further.. I was thinking about building some "custom" ducting and possibly doing some testing.. it might be ghetto, but it will show what can be done, and if its worth doing..

When i post a thread, I would love to have input, maybe i could tag you and some others for input..

Already been done, and the templates I have (for genwon 3) have been sent off to my engine builder/fab guy to have him make some for me.

IIRC, the test mule had seen 10+deg F drops on BATs (FMIC) and coolant temps by adding them.

I purchased what was said to be an OEM one online for under $60 (eBay). Found one on Jim Ellis Maz for about the same, but they said it was a pricing error, so it's being cancelled unless I want to pay $200 more for it. Now I just need to re-purchase the hardware to install it, after I replace my power steering pump that is.

you can get one cheap off ebay I think.. @Raider might be able to point you in the right direction.

they are helpful, but if you are doing major work on the car, i would hold off putting that thing on till after.. cause if you drop bolts, it will make it much harder to find them with the underplate on.

O I have one now. After the delays with Jim Ellis Maz, I was able to find a new OEM one off eBay. Once I get the install hardware; bolts, screws-- basically everything I "ordered" with Mazda previously, I will install. Hopefully the only major work is just the power steering pump which I'll do in advance.

Thanks for the info/reply, it's appreciated!

ofcoarse my man!

originally i tossed mine because it made life easier to access everything.. then i found out that it has a real purpose with air ducting .. (oops)..

I got the corksport under tray for my MS3, was wonderful in the snow and slush ate ice chunks pretty well too. much better than the plastic ones the kept braking. look I'm not the biggest fan of corksport, I still don't know why their shopping costs are so high. However even I can admit they have some good products and this under tray is one of them.

I even drilled a whole in it with a step but to get my occ drain through worked great.

I'll have to keep that under consideration. Wisconsin snow could mean I don't get long with the OEM plastic one. I also have a tendency to spray the under body to do my best to rid salt from the frame. I already have some spots in the wheel well.

I'm in mantioba and before was in Ontario I see -43F and that plastic just got too brittle in the cold even at -25C in Ontario, was fine in snow but any ice and bam cracked again.

best thing to fight corrosion is krown coat, I know a corrosion engineer who did a deep dive on under body coating etc and it's the only one he recommended.

I bought my speed new Oct 2013, know coated it every year but 1 and when I had it at the dealer for headlights In 2023, they didn't think I daily drove it. sure did and we salt the shit out of our roads. car would get washed through the winters but never the underside with the krown

That is great information. I'm not leaving the snow any time soon, that gives me something more to look in to. I need to jack the car up soon, so I'll get a good idea of how the undercarriage is. Thank you!!
