What turbo are you running?

PTE is a good brand and can make some awesome power, for sure. I've heard some hit/miss stuff about their QC, but overall it's pretty good. They're essentially Garretts in many ways, but with no water in the CHRA. Garrett has actually created the GTW series that is oil-only CHRA too, blurring the lines of dissimilarity between them and PTE even more.

For me, the fact there's no water in the CHRA is why I'm not going to run PTE and will eventually go EFR in the long-term. Heat management is going to be an issue with my goals of tracking/road courses/etc., so I want water going through my turbo in conjunction with an upgraded radiator. Plus, EFRs are next-level in so many other ways, too. They better be, for that price, LOL.

Ran a vband pte 5858 journal bearing from 124k to 162k on my stock block. Then another 8k miles on my built motor at this power level.

22psi up top, 12.5* at 7k



Then added meth and switched to a 5862 journal bearing that I got for $600 with 7k miles on it and have run it for another 45k miles since

35psi up top, 18* at 7500rpm


I'll be going with another 5862 most likely as mine is getting tired and starting to let some oil by the seals

Hey Sho relatively new to the forums and have been researching big turbos on stock bock like crazy and I'm in the predicament of getting either a S4 V2 or a used precision 6266 looks clean only about 5K on turbo anyways I'm going to sell my current cs turbo and intake and after doing the math a S4 is going to cost me about $500 or i can get a full 6266 kit used with everything cpe exhaust manifold, cosmic dump tube, drain tube, 4.5 in intake ram fab custom Cosmic Dp pretty much the entire kit off edge paying a difference of about $1,300
Im stock block ten 2 with 70K miles
i have a gardian angle box, CS large core FMIC, PNP Intake mani, and all that including other bolt ons.
i plan on tuning with Justin at freektune
so what turbo should i get??????
i only plan on being in the 350's until i can afford a JMF v2 with 6th port and go aux fueling for cooling not power really don't wanna push over 400 on stock block
so my question is should i go the 6266 for only about a $900 difference over a s4?
and most importantly Can it be done SAFLY ?
and in your opinion what other parts do u think i would need?

You'd be terribly underutilizing a 6266 if keeping it below 400whp, at that low boost it won't be in the efficiency range. I went pte because I planned ahead that I was gonna have a built motor and could turn it up and not have to buy things twice.

A 6266 is definitely overkill for goals <400whp

Yes i understand that but it would only be temporarily until i can afford the 4-5K built motor what are your thoughts on buying it since its a steal on a deal running it on stock block for a little while and then building the motor and be at a conservative power like 500whp?

What power ranges would these two turbos be most effective at?

You should talk to some tuners. The S4 and a 6266 are in WAY different power categories.

S4v2 here. Wanted to do an "everyman`s +" kind of build. A lot of folks bolt up an S3 or CS offering and make great numbers. I wanted to do just a tick more, and in a way fewer people go about it. We`ll see where it ends up in a few weeks as the tune literally just started. I`m only on the first revision after the base map so still hardly any timing, and I`m waiting on a replacement for a defective methanol controller to continue.

If you're going to go for 370-380, you may wanna go with an S3 even instead. A 6266 is a very big power turbo and would be a total dog around town. IMHO, there's no reason for a 6266 if you don't have a built block. A 6266 is a 73.5-80 lbs/min turbo, depending if it's Gen 1 design or Gen 2. That's easily a 650-750whp turbo, man. That and an S3 or S4 aren't apples and oranges, they're apples and ice cream, LOL.

@Redline is right. I'm running a 6062 (smaller than a 6266) and it definitely is not a little boost around town turbo. Even with my built motor with a single runner head I'm not seeing 20psi until ~3700rpm and the turbo is just getting started at that point. Now turn that into a larger turbo on a stock motor and your car is going to be asleep unless you are absolutely ON the throttle.

Corksports drop in replacement on the third iteration of the tune. Not quite done yet but hopefully soon after I get my bodywork back it will be. I just need the weather to cooperate with me since it's been put away since December.

edit: Stock block on 93 octane pump gas.

Looks like a good deal on the 6266 kit. You could possibly get that kit, offload the 6266 and get a 5858 instead. Run it with some meth on the stock block and still have headroom for up to 600 once built. Thats the path i chose

GT3071 here, first on a stock block making the usual 380 with stock fuel for around 18 months. Built motor making 430-450 depending on weather temps for the last 15 months with Aux fueling. I got the turbo used like new for 1k after a kid blew up his motor in the 3rd month of installing it due to boost creep not porting the exhaust side. Turbo looked brand new when I got and have been happy with it since. Spool is good and it pulls hard, running 28 lbs. I was making 370 whp on 93 with this turbo. When it finally plays out I'll probably go GTX3076 and stay internal. With new tune and more fuel I'll get 500 WHP which is plenty for a FWD car. I prefer to stay with something that's water cooled.

But it's okay, both of those problems will be fixed when I move back to my twinscroll Borg Warner. Either going to reuse my S362sxe or pick up an EFR budget depending.

Because their quality control is shit. I can't tell you how many threads I've seen across various forums titled "my PTE only has 2k miles on it and it already shit the bed". They've gotten better over the past 5 years or so but it's still not even close to Borg Warner or Honeywell quality. One of my welding buddies used to work at a shop that did tons of custom turbo setups and he told me their customer satisfaction rate with PTE turbos was 75%. They make good power, but so does Borg Warner, Forced Performance, and Holset stuff.

I still don't understand why we haven't popularized BW stuff yet like other platforms have. They're cheaper, higher quality and make just as good of power as PTE stuff. The amount of work it takes to move to a BW is no different than moving to a PTE either.

Don't take what I'm saying the wrong way, I'm by no means trying to talk shit to people who have chosen PTE, it's your money and I can't tell you how to spend it. It's just annoying how many times people have told me they chose PTE over BW or Holset because PTE was easier...

I'm sure you're gonna have a killer power curve with that turbo.

Anymore, PTE has become a darling of the platform. They're solid performing, for sure. But I like to see other options vetted out on our platform too. Plus for me, as I said before, not having oil AND water in the CHRA means I won't run a particular turbo. Personal preference with heat management implications that have great bearing on my future goals.
