Building for the road course...again

It took me a year of driving almost every day to learn to drive the Speed (still bone stock at this point) even halfway decently. While I don't know what my lap time would be in a stocker, I'm 100% certain it would be better than average.

I’d agree.

There was actually a genwon at this event. All stickered up. Big ass fmic hanging off the front end. Fire shooting out the exhaust.

he was 5-6 seconds off the pace of my civic and we can assume fbo turbo upgrade so probably ~350whp. Been there done that. It’ll take you forever to learn that. Not to mention development, setup, reliability. All that boring shit nobody likes to think about or spend money on

Many moons ago, there was a black MS3 that had the works done to it at a meet; big turbo, FMIC, etc. Gets all that shit installed, it's not quite night yet so he says fuck it and goes to a local track down here that's slightly faster than an AutoX course. Thinks all his (untuned, basemap) mods are gonna make him a god there.

Can't even sniff the farts of a dude that showed up in his girlfriends smart car (or Geo Metro...? I forget which one it was) (he was super embarassed, only there cause it needed new tires and brakes and he thought fuck it, I'll see what it can do before I put the new stuff on). I told him the other drivers wouldn't give him shit cause he was there racing, and the non drivers can't say shit because they ain't racing. It was hilarious how bad the MS3 lost to that dude.

haha. This is how it goes and competition is the quickest way to show people they are not all that.

The dudes who do well have gotten in their seat time, they compete alot which gives great experience in battle, they have also developed the car to suit their needs as well as fixing all the short comings. Its really not so simple just slap a bunch of shit on the car and send it. that never works.

Being in competition is an entirely different story too. at this track for example, coming out of the last corner youre pointing more or less at an almost 1/4 mile long wall. That wall has hundreds of people on the other side video taping, taking pictures, cheering, all staring at you. It is very different

Yeah that's another thing. I know I could be pretty quick if I have the track to myself, but I lack the experience to be fast vs others. Honestly I just like to drive, and if there's no one else around, all the better.

A lot of my early days were open lapping at the track with every sort of random shit. They’d literally let anyone in.

I kinda learned how to negotiate traffic and I’m not worried about passing mid corner. Need to use your brain though can’t just send it. That’s part of it.

A lot of people get stuck driving in their mirrors and that can be a big problem often leading to mistakes. I use to be bad for leaving no gap when someone’s holding me up. I’ve had to learn to back up and leave some space.

For the casual track day enthusiast open track is definitely preferred. I prefer open track to specially for fast laps

Yeah there's a shifter kart track near me that's open and they run car sessions and races all the time. If/when I get back up and running, you bet your ass I'll be clocking in for seat time.

Went for some logs over the weekend as tuner was making some corrections at part throttle.

I decided to do wot log, you know health check type thing.
I did one on satuday and 2 on sunday back to back. always the same road, same start point, same direction.

WELL...

Looks like I've lost over 15whp and 10ftlbs across the entire RPM range from 3500-8500 its just down everywhere.

What in the fuck??? Is this just the nature of beating an already high mileage mystery motor? It saw 3 track days in my car. previous history is who knows, was owned by some broke kid and beat to fuck. thats all i know.

I guess its impressive this shit got me first place against 270whp+ cars as virtual dyno shows me we make 198whp and 144wtq LOL embarrassing.

Shits getting annoying. i wanted to keep this as a spare engine but not if its fucking dying...

thinking ill leak down test it. If its the valves, I can lap those myself and slap it back together for a few bucks and keep it as my spare.
if its the rings, then fuck it. strip it down for parts. use the head for my forged motor then ill have to just by another long block as a spare.

Ive decided going into 2026 I need a spare that's mandatory at this point. Thought i had a good one here...guess not

Never underestimate the (literal) power of gearing.
Gearing is the answer to the "k20 dOnT mAkE aNy ToRqUe" problem that the entire internet seems to have. That and poor cam selection and terrible VTC tuning.

That said, am definitely missing that 10ftlbs and 15whp. It felt real real strong with those numbers. enough to walk away from bolt on/tuned turbo 1.6T hyundais which i think is pretty healthy. Buddies car is supposed to be making 240whp 290wtq based on his mods and flash tune and 24psi of boost lol.

The civic has consistently left him in the dust so either gearing, or that hyundai is seriously overrated or my honda virtual dyno numbers are seriously underrated.

I just need an engine to survive and give me 2 seasons of whatever i need without exploding or power dropping off. the virtual dyno is depressing AF cause the power curve is basically identical just less everything everywhere lol. fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

It's gearing for sure. This is why I did all the thrust math n whatnot before deciding to destroke and spin mine out. It *will* be faster than a Pu or Won with Pu gearing changes unless they are making so much more beyond whatever it is I wind up putting down at the wheels.

Harken back to the days when SP63 was insufferably smug with their diesel gearing and I rightly called that they'd be slower unless they drastically increased torque.

gearing is definitely magical stuff. I honestly thought id have some close ratio gearbox by now but my tuner has definitely convinced me we dont need it. shifting more is slow. no peaky power bands here. all about that midrange torque and spreading it out as wide as possible.

This does suck though. it feels a lot slower. like a lot lol i know its not big numbers in the turbo world but for me its a big loss.
green is pre event, red and blue are from sunday which is the first time the car was driven since the race so it started dying either before the event or during

I just want some consistent reliable power lol. I ain’t even asking for much here. Give me 230whp with 165wtq and we can do some serious damage with that lol fuck sakes

You sure you didn't just need to make a massive dump? Tools in the trunk? Sock in the intake?
Unfortunately I considered all of those things. No idea wtf is going on.

My alignment is off pretty bad. Pulls to the right hard so maybe there’s some drag there or something but I doubt it. Engine must just be clapped idk. I’ll leak down test it and see
