07 Mazdaspeed 3 Aug 22nd. Had the car plated in 2 days. What a phenomenal car this is. Very capble and in amazing condition to boot. Seeing as I've been passed the torch I plan to continue this build's general course. This will be a road course build and has been setup beautifully already for that purpose.

So far:

Shook the car down and I'm very impressed. (literally battery terminal clean up and PTFE spring guide from ground control) good to go neither was really needed but im anal......

Ordered an oil pressure, an oil temp gauge, and sandwich plate from corksport. Block8head dual pod. Heat Mat, Heat Tape, and stainless steel sheet for a custom heat shield.

Began the development of a custom boost activated intetcooler/rad mister from misc aftermarket and OEM parts.

1 gallon system ~10 mins of mist from 3 nozzles(2 on rad 1 on intercooler maybe) boost activated or momentary push button activated. Tank should be mounted in hatch.

Micro Plans:

Get gauges installed, add custom heat shield to firewall above mani shielding the cowl. Shield brake booster and charge coupler coming off turbo. Add additional shielding behind factory shield.

Drive the crap out of it.

Macro Plans:

Not so sure, small-mid turbo to widen the power band a bit on stock fueling. ST intake if I can work out TMIC mounting.

Even longer term:

More tire, more spring, damper revalve maybe some trick magnetic shocks Ive heard about recently.
Who knows how it'll actually end time will tell.

I had the pleasure of getting to see it in person in original silverdemon form when Scott (silverdemon) owned it back in 2012 when he had just devoleped the intake manifold that eventually became the JMF and his fuel cell setup with the gt35r

This was my first indication I was going to have to take do something with heat management on this car before I do some heavy road course shenanigans. Those little shield nuts were on there way out and the cowl was slightly singed in closest spot to the manifold.

So I made a custom shield out 3/32 SS (1/16 would have been fine and easier to work with). Drilled it to match the stock pickup points. Used a couple SS nuts m6-1.0 instead of the plastic nuts. I also took the time to use some DEI boom mat behind the factory shield for extra heater line coverage. It also runs across to shield the brake booster and charge coupler from the heat coming off the exmani.

Once getting the car on the lift to look over things it looks like the factory tunnel shield has been yeeted into oblivion cause racekor. Nice and new shiny one fixed that right up. Looks like I just need to apply a little heat tape here and there and this portion of things should be good to go. None of this really mattes for street use but in those later sessions when you've got an instructor wanting you to go 10/10 it's a car saver. I'm not much of an autocrosser, 90% roadcourse and its a different animal all together. Lots of work to keep a car from just melting.

Installed the corksport sandwich plate and their oil temp and oil pressures gauges. Picture courtesy of my extended e85 stop in the next city over testing the e85 percentage resulted in a dead battery too stupid to turn the key off...... Sheetz has that good shit at least. You can see the little tab I had to cut out of the vent to get the defroster vent screw out. Used a 1/4 inch drive philips and 3/8 adapter for some grip to back that screw out. Just pull the foam back and use some dikes is all you need to snip the plastic. Just fold it back and you're good to go. I'm still waiting on my Block8head gauge pod. However I have the gauges installed just 3m double side taped the cluster cover even wired the amber/white circuit up.

As a little side project I installed an intercooler sprayer system that uses a hobbs switch to determine when it sprays. Also has a manual switch. Not that I expect it to do much with the e50 mix. But hey if I can get a 10-15 degree drop in bats that'd be nice. So far no hard data. I used a 2004 f150 washer tank and nozzle along with a snow performance hobbs switch and random amazon line swiches fuse taps etc. Tank is bungee strapped to my rear shock brace for now. Ran into hood clearance issues where the scoop meets the hood with current nozzle location relocated it but you get the idea. This fan should help quite a bit at the track as well. Just so happens to be a nice fit.

Well that's the end of my big update. I also replaced the valve cover gasket, cleaned up the catch can and resealed the custom bungs in the VC. She's almost ready for the track. I did order a pcv plate gasket and oil filter housing gasket. This car got some WAP so I'm trying to touch the easy stuff to slow that down a bit. Some heat tape in the right places, a pad swap and brake fluid flush and we'll be ready to hit CMP on OCT 9. Then the Tail Of The Dragon the following week at MDC Fall 2020.

So I went and sent the absolute fuck out of this thing at the dragon. Quite impressed on that trip. Car took it like a champ but late Saturday night on a run to the GA cabin the K04 @VTMongoose installed decided it was a supercharger and an off shore oil drilling rig. Got it home and grabbed a cheap pu k04 and put it on. Waste gate got a bit hung up on it at first then it settled in.

Headed to Charlotte Motorsports Park last weekend for my first tack day with the car. Move spec miata. Move 944 turbo plus everything and anything except that pesky gt3rs that cracked my go pro lense. Even the hellcat was holding me back a bit here and there. It's a track with a few long acceleration zones I was quite impressed with how it compared to a hellcat in the straight bits. The car defiantly ate but not as much oil. Oil consumption is down quite a bit since slowing some leaks and replacing the turbo. I ran a 1:53.1. That isn't looking too shabby. I also have some 255 re71s here that I could prolly pickup a few seconds on over the rs4s. However the rs4s wear like Iron. This car is a monster on a road course and I can't wait to fully learn it and take it further from there.

Had a supra try me earlier tonight. He got pretty salty after I put a few cars on him once I got into 4th. Still had the 30 day tag on it. Still had my numbers taped on the car. Paint marker on the tires the whole 9 lol.

I know it's been awhile and 2020's into 2021's Winter was a relatively quiet time. Just taking the car out on nice days. So here's some pictures of that track day last year. The following posts will bring everyone up to speed on what's been going on with the car. Lots of self induced stuff.

So where do I even kick this off. The Vorshlag camber plates backed off on the main pillow ball nut. I heard the noise initially leaving a gas station. When that occurred I only drove the car twice more before identifying it was coming from the strut mount area. I narrowed it down to the pillow balls being loose. Went to tighten them up with a tq wrench set to like 40 ft-lbs(might not have even been that much) and snapped the passenger side strut threading clean off. I was using vice grips to hold the strut in place. As soon as I felt that snap I was devastated. This connection on an oem strut mount is up to 56 ft lbs if I recall correctly. I believe some damage occurred to the threaded portion from being loose. Big fat self learning experience.

I ended sending all the shocks out to delta vee which turned into quite a mess. Never was really given a real reason why but turn around was expected to be in the 6-8 week range on the highend but I knew it could go as much as 4 months. It took a little over 5 months and there was some large gaps in communication. Rob is a great dude and a shock tuning wizard. He's also very afforable. He 100% made it right and I wouldn't hesitate to work with him again I'd just align my expectations a little more realistically next time.

The reason all shocks were sent was to freshen them all up(and the fact he needed the valve pack from the broke shock to install to a new shock) we also revised the rear shocks with a little more bleed on the rebound to keep the car from trying to pull itself down so aggressively to "pounce around the cones" as I like to call it. The way this car is damped now it literally just floats over bumps. We're tickling full on race car with aero wheel rates, with this setup the car rides great. If you hit the right bump you still get light in the seat but no more smashing the ceiling like a virgin doing it the first time. This should suit the car much better for road course work and time attack. The previous setup was alot more fun on a backroad because you could kind of just pitch the car around and just squeeze the throttle and pivot right around turns at low speeds. I'm sure with the right alignment I can bring some of that character back, and now when I'm hitting bumps on the brakes at high speeds the car is much more settled.

The car lived on stands for quite awhile around 5 months actually. I did end up diving into some other work in the meantime. It's pretty impressive how much camber the Vorshlag plates allow. So much so the endlinks and OEM spring perches hit the frame rail. It's good to have this car back and on the ground again. I did end up diving into some other work in the meantime. Detailed in the next posts.

So I decided to delete the stock intake vtcs and install a block off kit form late night racing as well as work on porting the intake for more a flow match. So I focused on runner 4 and tickled runner 1. I left 2 and 3 virtually untouched. I also took time to clean the valves. I'll likely walnut blast them next time. The old fashion soak way is a pain in the behind. I also decided to install a damond catch can and pcv plate to complement the VC vented system that runs to the kozmic can in the fender. I also installed the egr block off plate for easier poor k04 swaps haha.

There was one other thing that had been going on with the car so I decided to dive in full stop. I eventually narrowed it down to a leaking injector seal. I jumped in and went ahead and serviced the full fuel system short of the in tank pump which is a DeatschWerks DW65c. I did Reys e85 safe seals and scrubbed the hpfp top to bottom. I have been chasing a slight fuel pressure drops at high idcs which surprise turned out to be the fprv that was slowly dying but would still hold pretty good pressure during testing. Once I got the fprv in and the actual combustion chamber resealed this thing was ripping like the day I got it. I really took the time to be anal about the fuel system. All new seals, injectors cleaned and flow balanced, all new basket filters you name it. I even still had cyl 2 the original offender trying to leak a little at 18ft/lbs. That seal was stuck like no other as well when I pulled the old seals out. You can see some of the scratches from a previous owner dealing with those epoxied cpe seals. So I decided to tighten it until it felt right and I have not had an issue since. I don't recommend doing this but I too my chance and it worked out well. The phantom knock that this car started to develop for no other reason than being stupid is now solved and it can breathe a little better in the crank case so it should be ingesting .1% less of of it's own oil. She's still a loose girl but worth a good ride because she tightens up once you get her warmed up. Sorry the pictures aren't in any real order but they're all there.

Most recently I had turbo flange studs and the gasket exit the building on a hard hwy pull I heard it hit the car lol. So I installed a new gasket and started the process of heat cycling and snugging and I'll keep a more regular eye on them as well as those camber plates. The car is in a real good place right now with the most recent alignment and just buttoning up some stuff like sketchy grounds that have died a slow death. We enjoyed the trip to the dragon with all the homies and the car just well straight up FUCKED.

As of right now the car just has the typical minor front cover leak which doesn't even drip and this k04 is starting to idle and cold start smoke. It'll last a little while longer but I do smell a cst4 coming on sooner or later. Video below of a recent pull it's amazing what some e48 a built and some preload on the wastegate can do with a little turbo.

Well this should have the v2.1 up to speed as of now. I'd really consider this a "v2.5" if I swap the turbo. Plus the shock revision really changed this car for the targets in mind. The previous owners did the hard work I just cleaned up old car stuff and my dumb mistakes.

So I got something special courtesy of the fiancé. BNRS3V4...…Gotta wife that.

I got the k04 pulled on Christmas Eve and got the BNR installed on Christmas day and made full jam on my pump gas base map by midnight on Christmas.

So I've been doing all the tuning with some pointers from @Sho @VTMongoose. All based off VT's maps almost entirely. The car is breaking up a bit, so I pulled the 4k mile old plugs and they have oil deposits as expected but nothing stands out to me other than oily deposits on cyl 1 and 2 as per usual. Previously gapped to .020 to stop blowout on the k04 at lower rpms. So I'm going with I'm out of IDC seeing as I'm still creeping up to 105% but there's tons of midrange left on the table. I've seen 24.2psi below 2900 rpms on this turbo and that's with the wgdc already walking down so I don't overshoot load targets. I also installed a new mac valve for good measure. The old one seemed to be getting a bit lazy maybe but still clicks so at least I have a backup. Need to snug the turbo nuts one last time for the 10th time.

Those vdyno figure are with an SAE correction for my conditions. What I have to give up on the top end to get the idcs down, I'm sure I can more than makeup for in the mid range. Top tip not having an egr and dropping the brake booster shield makes a turbo swap routine maintenance basically.
