A discussion on mitigating engine bay heat

Just curious, where do the push pin go. i held on to them as i never had one under the car, but didn't see a spot for them

OK, so the thing arrived (overnight parts from GA!) in a box as big as my back hatch, Inside, 50 air packs and a box with the tray. Looks like the plastiuc pinas are really not the tabs, but the 2 inside spots next to the middle bolt. One of the speed nut clips did arrive loose, as the plastic tab it clips under was broken. Fixed by squeezing. Anyway, will install soon.

@Raider looks like a good opportunity for a how to. If we have started a trend of people reinstalling their undertrays it would be helpful for those that don't remember where the hardware goes.

Shit it could just be a straight on photo of the tray with some labels on it.

Smartass...

Yeah, Ive never really seen anyone cut anything out of the hood for heat, but I have to imagine a vent above the EM would help a ton. Am I ready to go that far? Dont know yet.

Really its hard to gather proper data with so many varying conditions day to day.
Its been done, the trick is finding a way to trim the edge so its not to hidous. also, lots of cars BMW, Jeep) use functional vents that can be modded into a speed hood

Thanks for the post. Do you know if there has been much testing on different configurations. Or have a recommend for a testing method? trying to lay out a plan of testing this summer.

Yeah the strip behind the hood came out not on purpose but because the holes have ripped and it no longer stayed in place. The under tray isnt going back on because I work on the car too often and god I hate dropping tools on it not to mention it was in rough shape But maybe the idea of making my own under tray that is easier to remove should be up on my list. I would be very curious to see the results of with and without one, so maybe some testing is in order.

Ive kept as much radiator ducting as possible, and really plan to add more where possible just to keep coolant temps down. That along with an aux fan controller.

This is where I was at with things, I assume mazda knew what they were doing and it flows well under hood, but Ive also made more than a few changes so I dont know how much of that still hold true.
I used a wireless grill thermometer, with 2 probes, and got some Ideas where things were hotter and cooler, did some temp wrapping to see if it helped. nearly got banned for posting a pic with some results HAHA one thing that does help is the airfoil cross section shaped piece of sheet aluminum that covers the gap between the bumper, and core support on cars with the TMIC ducting removed.

I'm also partway thru putting a piece of thin sheet between the radiator and IM to try to duct all RAD,AC,IC heat under the engine. its very tight space, and bloody dificult to form.

The hardest things in this are 1 the essentially different issues between heat transfer of the stationary and moving car
and 2 ejecting the heat away from the IM

Cuz really, its the BAT's that drive this discussion

Yeah thats what I was talking about that I used at the evening TNT at the end of last year. Attached is a pic of the one I made. I just dont have enough data to know if it helped or not. I want to get some more ducting around the bottom area too. Im thinking more and more an undertray would help as well.
OOppps, yeah I shoulda read the hole thread..... Yes, that thing helps a good bit. air is like string, in that its easier to pull than push
it will take the path of least resistance and going thru 3 separate cores is not easy, that hole you covered helps keep it from bypassing the cores. and yours is prettier than mine......... go figure

Undo the two nuts and the dick part just falls off.

Duh.
Dunno about that, Zeus had his nuts removed at 11 months, and at 4years old was absolutely knocking the back outta the neighbors dog when she went into heat.

I think he gonna have to Piss off Lorena Bobbit...... Thats been proven to work

For me it's not BATs I'm concerned about (with a TR8 and spraying methanol, besides running an ethanol mix). My biggest concern is combustion chamber heat management to prevent ringlands issues.

With all of this talk about skid plates, anyone consider running CS's aluminum one? They make them for both Gens.

I thought about doing hood vents when I finally get my hood repainted this summer, but I also came across this, wonder how effective it would be evacuating the radiator heat. No need for a flap, just cut a couple of holes in the skid tray.
Love the Idea, but sadly a real bitch to do, cuz of that engine and wiring and hoses etc very inconviently in the way

If you need an engineer to tell you that you installed a bolt correctly you have bigger problems.

I've been removing and installing my undertray to do engine work, for the past 6 years! My Gen1 uses 3 10mm bolts across the front and then 2 on each side toward the rear of the tray. So 7 total. No clips.

You're missing the pushpins then. All Gen 1's came from the factory with two pushpins in addition to the seven bolts.

They're only to help with alignment and holding the undertray in place while you bolt / unbolt it, so don't worry about them being missing.

Uh, did you forget to link something?

Yeah something weird is happening with that link... When I came back to this thread today it just took me to the homepage of Amazon, but then leaving and coming back shows the correct link again. Weird.
